2012 is 'Interesting Times'

Image
We are at a turning point in history, in future this time will be regarded in the same manner as the Anglo-German Wars of 1914 to 1945, the Pan-European riots of the 1840's and the Revolutions of the 1780's, these are INTERESTING TIMES. There seems to be a great convergence of endings all focusing at this point in the history of society; Democracy, Banking, The Welfare State, Law and the Union Movement all seem to be converging on their Waterloos at the same point in time. That point being the day after the next election for President of the United States. Each of course was a much needed innovation in its turn, but like all things they have faded, perverted from their original course and become twisted and repressive. What once was a tool of enablement has become repression. Where once there was protection of freedom there are now the chains of debt, dependence, fear, regulation and sham. The good news is that these are breaking apart. Following every ending their...

There can be no such thing as gay 'Marriage'

Image
The plans to legalise gay 'marriage' as opposed to 'civil partnership' outlined by the Conservative Party of all people has left me somewhat nonplussed. Add caption It is similar to me campaigning to have the right to bare children, even though I do not have a womb in which the foetus can gestate nor the requisite biology to ever utilize that right which a change in law may give. Stonewall has become a pressure group which is increasingly out of touch with reality, homosexuality will never be the norm (unless you believe the conspiracy theory that they are flooding the water with female hormones to achieve exactly this of course), homosexuals will always be different. The challenge is not to make other people think you are the same, but to accept it and celebrate the difference. People for some reason attempt to gain acceptance from other people, instead of simply accepting themselves. I remember when Daren O'Toole first showed me the proposition for Civi...

Pondering Personhood

Image
Personhood and when it commences is a hot topic in law and philosophy not because of the free man movement but because of abortion. Hansard is a wonderful tool and there are records back for nearly 200 years if you just know  where to search . Now in my opinion and that of Hypocrates (of Hypocratic oath fame) life begins at conception but this article is not going to address any issues relating to abortion and for the purposes of this post you will need to proceed on the basis that this is fact, it is irrelevant either way as no absolute proof can be offered to confirm either side of this particular argument. Is the murder of a pregnant woman two murders or one? Do the Courts look upon such acts with greater condemnation than they would the murder of a man or woman who is not pregnant? I would hope that they would. It will however extend the argument that if the legal protections of personhood do not apply from the moment of conception, when do they apply. If the legal ...

Lessons from History: The Fall of Rome

Image
The Welfare State was born from the shared experience of the Second World War. The events pulled the community together to achieve a common goal in war. They admirably attempted to preserve this spirit in peacetime. They succeeded but only as long as those people who had experienced the horror of war remained alive to pass on their hard earned wisdom. Rome fell over centuries, a catalog of avoidable errors bought it to its knees. The same mistakes are being made in the Western World today. The people who fought and lived at that time are dying out, now largely only those who were just children remain. The experience of the later generations has been substantially different; they have suffered no hardship, they have not been drawn together in the same way as a community. The Welfare State has failed to adapt to the modern social conciousness. A perfect example of this has been provided by philanthropist David Kirsch whose Christmas gift of £100 to every person in Jersey has bee...
